Pet Insurance

With the state of the economy, the insurance business is booming.  These days, it makes sense to insure what you have so you are prepared in case of an emergency.  Pet insurance works in similiar ways to humans' health insurance.  In most cases, they don't cover pre-existing conditions, and there is commonly a deductible or copay out of pocket.  At KC, we don't try to make the choice for you, but there are some issues to consider when choosing a pet insurance provider.

1.  Wellness care - Some companies will not cover wellness care because they consider it part of responsible pet ownership.  This is an important factor when you are trying to absorb some of the cost of their wellness care.  However, remember that we do not submit claims in the stead of payment at time of service.  So, you will pay in the office out of pocket, and be reimbursed by the insurance company.  That factor somewhat cancels out the benefit of having insurance for wellness care.

2.  Congenital Defects - Most breeds have a common disease or condition they are prone to developing.  Many insurance companies won't cover claims associated with these congenital issues.  This where it is very important to read the fine print before insuring your new puppy.

3.  Percent of reimbursement - Make yourself aware of how much you will be reimbursed when your pet has an acute illness or accident.  It may not always be worth the premiums you pay monthly!
